Closing the Gap

The Joint Council on Closing the Gap received the Productivity Commission's inaugural review of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap on the 24th of January 2024, which was later made public. Regrettably, the Commission discovered that most governments had not fulfilled their commitments under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. According to the Commission's final report, which covers the first three years of government action on the agreement, governments have yet to fully comprehend the magnitude and nature of the change required to satisfy their agreement obligations. They have made four recommendations to the government to advance progress, including the sharing of power, recognizing and supporting Indigenous Data Sovereignty, fundamentally rethinking mainstream government systems and culture, and implementing stronger accountability.
