Our new KBYG reviews include one new cinema release from New Zealand, and a recent streaming film with some very recognisable cast members. So, let's see who we're talking about in this recent Netflix movie - Mother of the Bride.
Mother of the Bride is a romantic comedy that is witty and heartwarming, if somewhat predictable. The film has significant crude/sexualised humour, with many characters either sexualised or engaging in sexualising others. This, alongside the darker themes such as heartbreak, grief and a fear of being alone, make it best suited to families with teens and up, with parental guidance recommended for 10 to12-year-olds. According to our experts, the main messages from this movie are the importance of family and second chances; the importance of a strong support network; and that it is never too late for love.
In this detailed review, we unpack some talking points for parents and their children after watching Mother of the Bride, including the attitudes and behaviours, and their real-life consequences of having open communication to avoid misunderstandings. Mother of the Bride has some well known cast members, including Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt, and who could forget the bride? It's none other than Miranda Cosgrove, aka Summer Hathaway in the film School of Rock(2003). Check out our review of that well-loved film! In this KBYG Weekly, we also have a review of Ka Whawhai Tonu (Struggle Without End). This Maori film (with English subtitles) depicts the historic battle of Orakau, and boasts evocative cinematography and powerful performances, especially from the two young actors who play the lead roles. There is much value in learning from the past and allowing history to reveal its truths but, due to the general content, this film is best suited to audiences over the age of 16.
